Evidence-based policy is a popular phrase but only a naïve idealist
believes that research evidence is the primary driver of policy; other factors such
as politics and finance play a major part. For science to make its best
contribution we need focused research which provides answers to questions that
policy makers are asking, or should be asking. John Seager, Director of PHDC,
has been involved in applied health and development research in Africa for over
30 years and has a good sense of what is useful and what is not.
